Observe Anti Child Labour day in India

Governments, NGOs and supporters in millions come together to help end child labour. This phenomenal effort is seen all over the world due to the critical impact it has on the society in general and in the lives of children in particular. Support against child labour becomes the need of the hour considering the plight child labourers undergo. To spread awareness of this crucial social cause The International Labour Organization (ILO) observes June 12 as World Day against Child Labour. In India, Anti-Child Labour Day is observed on April 30.

Globally, many NGOs have taken up this cause as their core responsibility. This has enabled to maximise the impact of various Governmental schemes and initiatives. Apart from these core NGOs, there are many other not-for-profit organizations who supports the cause indirectly. NGOs like The Akshaya Patra Foundation that provide mid day meal to Government school children too shows its support against child labour. Through the mid day meal programme this Foundation aims to bring in maximum children to school, so that they can receive the goodness of education along with a wholesome meal. This indirectly helps to end child labour because this allows the children to come to school instead of letting them to work on the streets to earn a square meal.

The Anti-Child Labour Day in India is an effort to create awareness and educate the citizens about the hardships of the child labourers. It is also an effort to surface the responsibility we hold as social citizens. There are many ways to show your support against child labour. It could be by volunteering with NGOs that are working for the cause directly or indirectly, hold an event or campaign to spread awareness and raise funds, or you can also choose to   donate to stop child labour. You support against child labour will uplift the society in a blissful manner.

Though there are specific days like Anti-Child Labour Day in India and World Day against Child Labour, it is our moral responsibility to continue our effort to help end child labour beyond these specified days. When we donate to stop child labour, we are actually taking a constructive step towards building the future of numerous needy children and the society at large. It is an effort that will show its positive results in the days to come. On this day of Anti-Child Labour Day in India, let’s take the first step towards making a practical and much needed difference. Act now to help end child labour.

Mid Day Meals Boost Education

The mid day meal programme is an initiative of the Government of India to provide free school lunch to the children studying in Government school. It is an effort to bring children to school so that they get educated along with getting one nutritious meal a day. In order to maximise its potential, the mid day meal programme implementation has been taken up by many NGOs. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is one such NGO. This NGO is based in Bangalore, India.

In June 2000, Akshaya Patra began implementing the mid-day meal programme in 5 Government schools in Bangalore by feeding 1500 children. The need of food for education was well understood by the Foundation. This understanding led it to spread its wings across India. Apart from Bangalore, this Indian NGO provides mid-day meal in 9 States namely- Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

It firmly believes that education has the power to bring about permanent change for two of the crucial crisis- hunger and illiteracy. This is the reason it aims to provide ‘unlimited food for education’. Hunger and illiteracy are also the two crucial UN Millennium Development Goals that are to be achieved. Through the mid-day meal programme Akshaya Patra is trying to make a difference in the lives of many needy children in India and thereby contributing towards the global goals.

Akshaya Patra Boosting Education through Mid Day Meals

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a not-for-profit organization based in Bangalore, India. It implements the mid day meal programme under the aegis of Central and State Governments. In line with the general notion, Akshaya Patra too opines that education works at the grass root level to eliminate poverty, illiteracy.

But, to reap the absolute benefit of education, it is important to first provide food to the children because empty stomach will not let the mind learn. Due to this reason, this Indian NGO is in a constant strive to feed more and more children so that they can also get education while receiving a wholesome meal. Akshaya Patra is currently feeding 1.3 million children across India. It is operational in 19 locations across 9 States covering more than 9000 Government schools.

This Indian NGO has well understood the importance of food and education and so believes in providing ‘unlimited food for education’. More often than not, this meal acts as the first meal of the day for many children across the country. Despite difficulties, this meal acts as a huge incentive for parents to send their children to school. It gives them the hope that at least their children will receive one wholesome meal for the day. This indirectly helps their children to get educated too.

The Foundation is aware of how important it is for the children to enjoy their meal. So, to ensure the same it prepares the meals in a way that it is both nutritious and palatable to each region. Studies have shown that the mid day meal has-

        i. Increased school enrolment
       ii. Improved attendance among children
       iii.Countered classroom hunger
iv.Improved concentration level and performance of the students
       v. Reduced school drop-out rate

The NGO has witnessed the confidence that education brings into a child. It encourages the child to aspire and achieve high. It also gives a direction to the child’s life. These reasons motivate the Foundation to spread its reach. Each academic year comes with fresh promises and new challenges. Be a part of this cause to provide food and encourage education among the children of India. Be the reason for their smiles. Join Akshaya Patra-
The potential to transform the lives of millions of Indian children lies within you.

CNN Features Akshaya Patra as 'Culinary Revolution'

In the picturesque temple town of Vrindavan, 10-year-old Maya and her three siblings walk to school every day on an empty stomach. She says her parents can't afford to feed them adequate meals; they eat bread and milk for dinner and nothing for breakfast.

As the eldest child, she often has to skip class to help her parents harvest wheat. Maya says her parents believe this is a more efficient use of her time, but she has another good reason for attending school -- more food.
