How many mid-day meals can Rs. 750 afford? The Akshaya Patra Foundation recently released a video that captured the opinion of people across all sections to know what Rs. 750 can buy. Interestingly, it was discovered that a lot of things can be bought with Rs. 750. But at the same time Akshaya Patra’s latest video also brought to fore that this amount in today’s time has become quite trivial. Growing inflation and rising income levels has made this amount more disposable than ever.

But there is a different story altogether when it comes to Akshaya Patra. This mid-day meal implementing NGO provides free school lunch for one child for one whole year with this Rs. 750. Yes, this is what Akshaya Patra does. So when you contribute Rs. 750 either as an offline or online donation to NGO, you are actually providing one nutritious meal per day for one child for one whole academic year. Rs. 750 is a step towards countering classroom hunger, malnutrition and illiteracy thereby paving way for a healthy, literate and hopeful nation.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is one of the most well-known NGOs in India. It started as a NGO in Bangalore in 2000 and gradually expanded its operations in other parts of the country. The Foundation's vision statement clearly spells out its purpose, "No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger." It indicates that this NGO in India not only wants to provide free school meal rather it wants to harness the potential of food in strengthening education. It is seen that India is a young country in terms of average age of its population yet it is one of the poorest when it comes to literacy rate and malnutrition. Thus it is an attempt by this NGO in India to counter classroom hunger, malnutrition and illiteracy through providing healthy, nutritious and hygienic meal to the children in Government schools.

Mid-Day Meal Scheme in Hyderabad

The Mid-Day Meal Scheme is a free school lunch programme initiated by the Government of India. This school lunch programme is to be implemented in all Government schools across India. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme acts a supporting pillar for education schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan. In the socio-economic scenario of India, food plays an important role. Indeed education schemes have brought about awareness and positive changes in the society but it needs the extra backing of food. Financially backward families prefer their children to work rather than study because that will add an extra hand to earn. But the provision of a free meal at school influences the minds of the parents to send their children to school with the hope that their children will at least get one wholesome meal per day. This in turn also leads them to get educated.
