One meal churning out millions of children success stories

The Akshaya Patra Foundation has been serving mid-day meal in Karnataka since June 2000. From the first day of serving meal till today, the Foundation has been witness that each meal has its own story. Apart from serving mid-day meal in Karnataka, The Akshaya Patra Foundation presently serves mid-day meal across 10 states of India thereby feeding 1.4 million children every day. Interestingly, the Foundation has 1.4 million heart warming and unique children success stories to share.

One such story is about a trio hailing from Mysore district of Karnataka. Anjali, Pooja, and Chandu are three siblings studying in Government Higher Primary School, Devaiahana Hundi, Mysore, Karnataka. Anjali and Pooja have been the students of this school since five years and Chandu has joined this school recently. Previously Chandu used to study in a private school but due to their father’s overdue debts, the family cannot afford to send Chandu to a private school. The three siblings walk up about 6 kilometres to and fro daily to reach school and back home.

Not just financial difficulty, these children also witnessed their parents’ separation in April 2014.
Ever since then they have no contacts with their mother. But the gleaming faces of the trio conceal all the hurdles they face at home and make others believe that they are happy. All the three are the beneficiaries of the mid-day meal in Karnataka provided by The Akshaya Patra Foundation. Anjali adds that the meal tastes lot like their mother’s cooking.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation has many such warm children success stories to share. Know these children little more than just beneficiaries. Join the mission of providing at least one wholesome per day to a child who also a heart full of dreams. Feed a child today.

Children Blogs: Millennium Development Goals

The children blogs of The Akshaya Patra Foundation brings across status of the crucial Millennium Development Goals (MDG) declared by the United Nations (UN) in 2000. The Millennium Development Goals is a charter of eight critical goals that were acceded upon and signed by over 189 countries.  This children blog will focus on two of the eight goals mainly so because of its bearing in the progress and development of India and are related to the Foundation’s cause.

The UN MDG 1 aims to eradicate extreme hunger and poverty. The first target of MDG 1 is to ‘halve between 1990 and 2015 the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day.’ In Indian context it has been observed that poverty rates dropped from 45% in 1994 to 34% in 2005. The latest National Sample Survey indicates that it has further dropped by 5% from 2005 to 2010. This is a positive sign that India has been making progress towards reaching this target. But it still has some more miles left until the finish line.

The second target of MDG 1 is to ‘halve between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.’ It has been observed that during the period of 1999 to 2006 the malnourishment rate in India declined from 43% to 40% i.e. 3%. India needs to reduce malnourishment rate to 26% by 2015 but at the current pace it will be able to reach only 33%. Thus a collective effort is a necessity. Here Akshaya Patra indirectly plays a role to contribute to this target with its feed hungry child motto. Feed hungry child intends to create awareness in the society as to how one meal can change the life of child.

The UN MDG 2 aims to achieve universal primary education. India has shown commendable progress on this goal by having enrolment rate of 98.3% in 2009-2010. The youth literacy rate in 2007-2008 was 93% in urban areas and 83% in rural areas. The only challenge is the fluctuating rate of children continuing in primary school from grade I to grade V.

There are many NGOs working towards these UN MDGs. These organisations require huge manpower and financial support. Through donation for NGO you can lend a hand in achieving a better world. India’s Millennium Development Goals: A Semi-Success Story will provide more details on this children blog. Read more about the UN MDGs at Millennium Development Goals India Country Report 2011.

Mid-day meal scheme in Tamil Nadu

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, one of the charitable trusts in India began serving mid-day meal in Tamil Nadu since July 2011. Tamil Nadu is the pioneer state to initiate the mid-day meal programme. This initiative has a little story behind it. Once K. Kamaraj, Tamil Nadu’s former Chief Minister came across a little boy herding livestock near the town of Cheranmahadevi. Kamaraj asked him, “What are you doing with these cows? Why didn’t you go to school?” The little boy instantly retorted, “If I go to school, will you give me food to eat? I can learn only if I eat.” Unknowingly this little boy had touched upon the country’s most critical problem that a child cannot learn with a hungry stomach. This event led to the introduction of the mid-day meal scheme in Tamil Nadu in 1960s with an aim to reduce hunger and encourage universal primary education.

Following many such events, the Supreme Court of India on 28 November 2001 passed an order stating all the children of Government schools and Government aided schools should be provided with free cooked mid-day meal. As a charitable trust in India, Akshaya Patra had begun providing mid-day meal in June 2000. After the Supreme Court’s declaration this charitable trust in India started working closely with the Government and adopted the Public-Private Partnership model. The Foundation started serving mid-day meal in Karnataka and gradually spread its reach to nine other states of India. One among them is Tamil Nadu. As a NGO in Tamil Nadu for children Akshaya Patra is currently feeding 718 children in a school of Chennai.

The mid-day meal scheme in Tamil Nadu is one of the most effective, well run and structured programmes. The State Government plays a very participative role in this programme. Almost all the Government schools get covered under the scheme. As a NGO in Tamil Nadu for children, Akshaya Patra caters to one private school in the state. Apart from operating as a NGO in Tamil Nadu for children, Akshaya Patra also operates as a NGO in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha. In total this charitable trust in India provides mid-day meal to 1.4 million children of 10,661 Government schools spread across 23 locations.

Akshaya Patra employs two formats of kitchen in preparing mid-day meals - centralised kitchen and decentralised kitchen. 21 locations follow the centralised kitchen format and two locations namely – Baran in Rajasthan and Nayagarh in Odisha follow the decentralised kitchen format due to topographical reasons. The NGO employs the centralised kitchen format to cater to the mid-day meal scheme in Tamil Nadu.

This charitable trust in India aims to feed 5 million children by 2020. Alongside sustaining its service as a NGO in Tamil Nadu for children and in nine other existing states, the NGO plans to expand its reach to newer locations so that more children can get benefitted with the already promising mid-day meal programme.

Support the charity to feed more children!

Mid-day meal scheme implementation by Akshaya Patra

Mid-day meal scheme is one the most promising initiatives of Government of India. The mid-day meal scheme proves to be a supporting pillar for the Right to Education and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan programmes. Witnessing the positive change that this scheme has brought about in the education sector, the Government encourages participation from the society in the implementation of this scheme to reach the grass root level. Thus many Non-Governmental Organisations in partnership with the Government has taken up this scheme as their primary cause. One of the many NGOs is The Akshaya Patra Foundation. Akshaya Patra has been implementing the mid-day meal scheme across 10 states of India. Through the mid-day meal scheme it serves free school lunch to 1.4 million school children every day in more than 10,600 Government schools.

Akshaya Patra implements the mid-day meal scheme by operating in a Public-Private Partnership model. The NGO receives support from the Central and various State Governments in the form of grants and subsidies. The remaining expense is met by the contributions from generous and thoughtful donors. The mid-day meal scheme acts like an incentive for the children of lower economic sector to come to school. The meal is like a hope for the underserved children that if not all the three meals, at least they will receive one wholesome meal if they are at school. Akshaya Patra has realised that for the same reason the mid-day meal scheme acts as an incentive for the parents also to send their children to school. Once the children are at school, they benefit from both education and food.

It's true that an empty stomach only thinks about food thereby making education a secondary factor. And this hunger pushes children to go out to earn a square meal. The mid-day meal scheme provides free school lunch to Government school children and this food gives children the strength to learn and grow. As a citizen you too can be a part of eliminating hunger and propagating education for the young hearts. Donate to NGO to feed the children. Akshaya Patra knows the significance of each penny. Thus it steers 84% of its total income towards meeting the mid-day meal scheme cost. One can donate to NGO either through online donation mode or offline donation mode. In both instances, the donor will receive 100% tax exemption for any donation amount of more than Rs. 500. Besides donation a supporter can also to organise fundraising events for Akshaya Patra. Fundraise with us, Fundraising ideas and Get involved will give further insights on fundraising activities. Each support counts in shaping up the future of millions of underserved children.

Donate to NGO to feed and educate the millions of dream filled hearts who awaits your care.

First mega kitchen of Indian charitable trust

10 years ago, who knew that the humble kitchen of Hubli that was providing mid-day meals to 4,000 children will grow to become a mega kitchen? The Akshaya Patra Foundation, an Indian Charitable Trust, has been implementing the mid-day meal programme since 2000. The charity’s Hubli kitchen was established in 2004 and was one of the first kitchens of the Foundation. Working in partnership, the Government of Karnataka allotted a bigger plot in the outskirts of Hubli to cater to the increasing number of beneficiaries. The new facility is equipped with advanced technological mechanisms and has become the first mega and model kitchen of this Indian Charitable Trust. This kitchen is an example of the joint effort of professional architects, devotees and engineering students. The Hubli kitchen is an ISO 22000:2005 certified centralised facility. Currently the Hubli kitchen provides mid-day meals to over 126,000 children every day covering around 789 Government schools.
