As a mid-day meal NGO in Telangana, The Akshaya Patra Foundation first served free school meal to the children of Hyderabad in October 2008. Akshaya Patra is a full-fledged mid-day meal NGO in India that began with the vision of 'No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger' in June 2000. Strategically increasing the number of beneficiaries every year this today serves mid-day meal to more than 54,849 (as on March 2014) children every day covering 454 Government schools in Telangana. It runs a mechanised centralised kitchen to prepare nutritious and fresh mid-day meals for the beneficiaries and needs support from NGO volunteers.

Apart from working as a NGO in Telangana, Akshaya Patra serves mid-day meal on nine other states of India. Each day Akshaya Patra serves freshly cooked wholesome meal to more than 1.4 million children by covering 10,661 Government schools. This NGO covers 23 locations across the 10 states. The operational expanse of Akshaya Patra allows it to not only provide food but also support education of children who otherwise would have been sent to earn for their meal. It works with the motto of providing unlimited food for education. Hence it has been working tirelessly for almost 15 years without compromising on the quality of food. This NGO in India makes sure that each morsel of the meal is enjoyed by the children. Therefore the NGO serves local palate of the region. For example: the menu of north zone locations includes roti (Indian flat bread) in the meal whereas south zone locations have rice in their meal menu.

While serving as a NGO in Telangana, and other states in the country, this NGO in India realised the significant role that volunteers can play in spreading the message about the potential of mid-day meal programme in building up a literate and confident nation. Like many other non-profit organisations Akshaya Patra too have a platform for volunteer participation. The NGO volunteer programme is a platform for citizens with a trait of being the catalyst of change for the betterment of the society. Foundation initiated its service towards children way back in June 2000. Since then it has not left any stone unturned to maximise the potential of the mi-day meal programme. It began its service as a NGO in Bangalore in the state of Karnataka, gradually moved to other locations in the state and then further expanded to other states of the country. Akshaya Patra made its move towards Rajasthan by opening its first centralised kitchen in Jaipur in February 2004. Subsequently, it made its advent to other parts of the state as NGO in Nathdwara, Baran and very recently as NGO in Jodhpur. In total the reach of this non-profit organisation in Rajasthan is more than 135,000 children covering more than 1,800 Government schools.

Alike other serving locations, this NGO in Nathdwara too serves local palate to the children of more than 435 Government schools. It also regularly takes feedback from beneficiary schools regarding the taste, quantity and quality of the mid-day meal served so that it remains abreast with any improvisations needed. Akshaya Patra runs three centralised kitchens in Rajasthan one each at non-profit organisation in India, Jaipur and Jodhpur. It operates the decentralised format of kitchen in Baran due to difficult terrain and connectivity to construct centralised kitchen.

Akshaya Patra aims to reach out to more children as a mid-day meal providing NGO in Nathdwara. Along with the local support, it looks forward to support from across the country and overseas too. Donation for NGO in Nathdwara is certain to aid in expanding the mid-day meal service to more number of children by including new schools in and around Nathdwara. High spirited beneficiaries of NGO in Guwahati

As a mid-day meal NGO in Guwahati, Akshaya Patra made its advent in the February 2010. Since then this NGO in Guwahati has seen for itself the real need of mid-day meal in this section of the country. With aspirations soaring high among the children of this beautiful north-eastern state, there are numerous heart-warming Akshaya Patra success stories from this part of the country. Here is one of the success stories from Guwahati.

This Akshaya Patra success story is from a place called Khudradadhi. Till the introduction of Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards, 80% of the working population of Khudradadhi were mainly engaged in agriculture. But, the BPL cards changed the occupational scenario of this place. As BPL card holders get grains at subsidised prices, they have moved to alternate occupations like fishing, brick-kiln workers and casual labourers in the city. This has left a mere 10% practicing agriculture. This shift in occupational trend has led to a lack of variety in the food basket especially vegetables.

Hareshwar Deka, Head Master of Khudradadhi Lower Primary school says that the meal menu of people here is mostly rice, dal (pulses) and potato. This food habit with lack of vegetables has brought about nutritional deprivation among the children of this locality. But he goes on to add that since Akshaya Patra started serving mid-day meal there has been positive change in the health of the children. This change is attributed to the various nutritious food provided by this NGO in Guwahati.

Pithali, a Standard IV student at the Khudradadhi Lower Primary school is a daughter of a seasonal mason and her mother adds on to the family income by stitching mekhala chadars (a traditional Assamese outfit). It indeed is difficult to sustain a family of five with a monthly income of just Rs. 2500 – 4000 and hence their meals mostly comprise of rice, yellow dal (pulses) and potato curry. Pithali says, “I love the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal. I look forward to Wednesdays and Saturdays as we are served with pulao, khichdi and kheer”. This little girl aspires to become an Assamese film actress and take her family for a world tour one day. The Head Master proudly adds that all girls of Khudradadhi are enrolled in the school. He admits that getting them to school is a difficult task, but mid-day meal has worked as a wonderful supporting programme.

NGO in Rourkela serving mid-day meal to more than 40,000 children

The Akshaya Patra Foundation began its service as a NGO in Rourkela from November 2013. Rourkela is the third location in Odisha where Akshaya Patra started implementing the mid-day meal programme. This NGO operates a centralised kitchen unit and caters to more than 40,000 children across 433 Government schools in the area. This kitchen of the NGO in Rourkela is a perfect example of Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives in aiding the role of NGO for betterment of the society. As a part of Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) had donated a philanthropic amount of Rs 8.24 crore to Akshaya Patra in order to expand its mid-day meal programme in Rourkela. This development was strategic for the Foundation to initiate its service as a NGO in Rourkela. Aside serving in Rourkela, Akshaya Patra is present in three other locations of Odisha namely Puri, Nayagarh and Cuttack.

Akshaya Patra is aware that the role of NGO is not only to expand its operations but it is also to sustain the positive impact and service in the existing locations. Hence, sustainability is one of the main focus areas of Akshaya Patra. The Foundation has received appreciations and recognitions from many prestigious institutions and personalities for its persistent effort in providing hygienic, nutritious and freshly cooked mid-day meal to children every day. Apart from functioning as a NGO in Rourkela, this Foundation also serves as a mid-day meal NGO in 22 other locations across the country covering 10 states. Altogether, it serves mid-day meal to more than 1.4 million children every day. As a mid-day meal provider, Akshaya Patra believes that one of the role of NGO should be to cater to the local palate of the region so that children relish the meal they are eating. In view of this, the menu of Akshaya Patra kitchens varies according to the region. For example: rice and sambar (a South Indian curry made out of lentils and vegetables) are the main menu items of Akshaya Patra kitchens in the south whereas roti (Indian flat bread) and sabji (vegetable curry) become the main menu item for north Indian kitchens.

Seeing the potential of the mid-day meal programme and the significant role of NGO, the Government provides ample support to the NGOs in the form of grants and subsidies. The Government also allows these NGOs to seek donation from individuals and corporate houses and other supporting agencies. Donation for NGO is a needed element for all types of non-governmental organisations. Whether it is a well-established organisation or a start-up organisation, every NGO requires the involvement of the society either in the form of donation for NGO or volunteering to spread the cause. The same holds true for Akshaya Patra too. When you contribute Rs. 750 as donation for NGO, you are actually aiding to feed one child for one whole year.

Offer a meal per day through donation for NGO.

Charitable trust in India provides tax exemption on donation

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a charitable trust in India. This charitable trust has been working towards the cause of providing mid-day meal to children since the year 2000. Akshaya Patra started the cause by feeding just 1,500 children of five Government schools in Bangalore, Karnataka. Gradually the need of this programme was felt in nearby schools too and it started expanding its feeding capacity to more schools and children. Over the years along with continuing to serve mid-day meal in its original serving location, this charitable trust in India strategically expanded itself to cater to the needs of the rest of the country. With the help of Central Government, various State Governments and many generous donors, Akshaya Patra today serves as a NGO in 23 locations of 10 states.

One of its service locations is Vadodara in Gujarat. As a NGO in Vadodara, Akshaya Patra started its operation in November 2009. This NGO in Vadodara runs a centralised kitchen to cater to the mid-day meal requirement of 113,593 children studying in 616 Government schools (index as per March 2014). The centralised kitchen prepares meals that cater to the local palate of the region so that children enjoy their meal to the fullest. While serving as a mid-day meal NGO for more than a decade Akshaya Patra realises the importance of this one meal in every child's life. Each of the beneficiaries of this meal has their own story of struggle, hope and aspiration. As a mid-day meal NGO, Akshaya Patra strives to serve the local palate of the region so that children eat with joy. Thus as a NGO in Vadodara too Akshaya Patra's centralised kitchen prepares meals that cater to the local palate of the region so that children enjoy their meal to the fullest.

In general, the mid-day meal programme has seen many positive impacts on children and the education initiatives. It has seen an increase in enrolment, decrease in drop-out rate, better concentration level among children, and also there has been a rise in parents sending their children to school rather than sending the young hearts to earn a living. The vision statement of this charitable trust in India very clearly states that, 'No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.' Thus it has set itself the mission to serve 5 million children by 2020.

This charitable trust in India is aware of the significance and potential of society's engagement with the cause. Thus, it acknowledges and appreciates the contributions made by the supporters, volunteers and donors. This charitable trust in India has received permission from Finance Ministry to provide tax exemption on donation

to its donors. Thus, a donor becomes eligible for tax exemption donation for his contribution of Rs. 500 and above. Once eligible, the donor receives 100% tax exemption on the amount he or she has contributed. Tax exemption donation serves the dual purpose of benefitting children and donors too.

Join the mission of this charitable trust in India.

Tax deductible donations for mid-day meal programme

The mid-day meal programme implemented by The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an initiative of the Government of India to provide free school lunch to children studying in Government schools. This programme acts like a supporting pillar to aid literacy programmes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. The mid-day meal programme has been able to bring children to school from lower socio-economic families for the main reason and hope of receiving one free meal. Parents who would otherwise send their children earn a square meal send them to school primarily for the reason of free food and in the process these children receive their rightful share of education too. Witnessing the power of one meal, the Government of India started to encourage the participation of Non-Governmental Organisations to implement the mid-day meal programme even at the grass root level of the society. This encouragement has led many NGOs to take up mid-day meal programme as their core cause. One such organisation is a NGO in Bangalore.

This NGO in Bangalore started serving mid-day meal at Government schools in Bangalore before the official orders by the Supreme Court to provide cooked mid-day meals at schools. But after the official orders by Supreme Court in 2003, it was a welcome progression for this NGO in Bangalore to implement the mid-day meal programme in partnership with the Government. This NGO in Bangalore is The Akshaya Patra Foundation. It was started in June 2000, with the vision of Srila Prabhupada that 'No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger'. This NGO in Bangalore sets itself a mission of feeding 5 million children by 2020. This NGO in Bangalore functions in a Public-Private Partnership model and gives ample platform for the society to participate in furthering the cause of mid-day meal programme. It not only confides itself to monetary donations rather it welcomes participation of corporate houses, innovation and technology organisations, students, professionals and the global participation for a knowledge sharing and volunteering partnership.

Akshaya Patra is one of the top most Non-Governmental Organisations in India. Its presence can be felt in 23 locations of 10 states in India. Every day this NGO serves mid-day meal to more than 1.4 million children across the country. For implementation of the mid-day meal programme, it receives support from the Central Government and various State Governments. One of the significant supports it has received over the years is the tax exemption act for donations. This means that a donor's contribution is considered eligible as tax deductible donations. According to Section 80G and 35AC of the Income Tax Act any donation of above Rs.500 made towards the mid-day meal programme of Akshaya Patra will be considered as tax deductible donations. Being eligible for tax deductible donations means that the donor will receive 100% tax exemption for the amount he donated towards this NGO.

What better way to do charity than contributing tax deductible donations towards mid-day meal programme and providing wholesome meal to millions of underserved children of the nation?
