The Akshaya Patra Foundation, the operating mid-day meal NGO in Assam first made its eastward expansion in February 2010. Nestled among lush green tea gardens and scenic landscape with varied flora and fauna, Assam is one of the beautiful destinations of the north-east India. Akshaya Patra upon receiving an invitation from the State Government of Assam set up a centralised kitchen in Guwahati and started serving mid-day meal in Assam's Guwahati region from February 2010 onwards.
It indeed face challenges during initial set up of the kitchen due to terrain and non-availability of resources yet this NGO in Assam sailed through it successfully. It is one of the largest infrastructures of its kind in this part of the country providing mid-day meals in Assam across 592 Government schools in Guwahati region every day.
The programme of mid-day meal in Assam has had many positive impacts on the factors like enrolment, attendance and retention. There has been a remarkable improvement in the health of the children too. Along with providing mid-day meal in Assam, it has also initiated school outreach programme to spread awareness among teachers and students about the programme and the importance of health and nutrition. Recently, this NGO in Assam launched the 'Kids for Kids' programme in Guwahati. Through this programme Akshaya Patra aimed at providing a platform to the children of reputed schools to join hands with Akshaya Patra and support the beneficiaries. This initiative was well received by the student community and they took part in huge numbers. About 500 students from various schools stepped forward to support this initiative benefitting nearly 1500 beneficiaries of the NGO in Assam.
