Babita, a Senior Teacher has been working with the school for past eight years and has witnessed the difference one wholesome meal makes to the children. She says, "About 80% of the children in her school miss the most important meal of the day i.e. breakfast.” This means to say this large group of children comes to school empty stomach. She goes on to add, “Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal in Karnataka has brought about a significant change in the lives of all the students.
The parents of these children work as helpers in Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR). So they leave their homes early in the morning and come back only in the evening. This leaves them with no time to prepare breakfast or lunch. Hence, the mid-day meal becomes the first meal of the day for these children. Prior to Akshaya Patra serving mid-day meal the children used to mostly get stale food. But since 2007 when this NGO in Bangalore started serving mid-day meal the children get to eat freshly cooked nutritious meal every day. The impact of the mid-day meal is seen in their improved concentration level during class hours too.”
According to the teachers of this school, there are many gifted children in each class who are sharp determined about their future. They pose as examples for other students and motivate them to study better. The mid-day meal provided by this NGO in Bangalore is a significant intervention in shaping up the future of these young aspirants.
