Mid-day meal programme in Karnataka

The Akshaya Patra Foundation began as an NGO in Karnataka running the mid-day meal programme when it set up its first kitchen at H.K. Hill, Bangalore, in 2000. The growing necessity to feed more children in need led Akshaya Patra to start kitchens in the districts of Hubli, Bellary, Mangalore and Mysore, including a second unit at Vasanthapura, Bangalore, expanding the mid-day meal in karnataka states. Currently the NGO is also operating in nine other states feeding 1.4 million children every day. It sustains its operation with Government grants and donations to charity.

All kitchens of Akshaya Patra in Karnataka are centralised and the one in H.K. Hill, Bangalore is the first kitchen. Implementing the mid-day meal programme, this kitchen feeds 85,204 children every day. It is an ISO 22000:2005 certified centralised kitchen unit. There are 35 custom designed meal distribution vehicles to deliver the cooked meals to the beneficiary schools. As an NGO in Karnataka, the organisation opened its second kitchen at Hubli in July, 2004. It's also an ISO 22000:2005 certified centralised kitchen feeding 126,693 children every day using 40 custom designed distribution vehicles. To improvise the mid-day meal programme this kitchen has also taken up new initiatives like setting up lush green kitchen gardens, along with eco-friendly initiatives like an effluent treatment plant, rain water harvesting pond, and vermicomposting.

The third kitchen of Akshaya Patra's as an NGO in Karnataka was established at Mysore in August 2004. As centralised unit, the kitchen currently feeds 13,835 children each day implementing the mid-day meal programme. Seven custom-made meal distribution vehicles are used to deliver the cooked meals to the beneficiary schools. This NGO in Karnataka expanded to Mangalore opening its fourth location in the state. The kitchen currently feeds 19,043 children each day under the mid-day meal programme. The cooked meals are delivered to the beneficiary schools by 11 customised meal distribution vehicles. As the fifth Akshaya Patra kitchen in the state the Bellary kitchen was established in July 2006. This ISO 22000:2005 certified centralised kitchen unit feeds 115,945 children each day. It uses 32 customised meal distribution vehicles to deliver the cooked mid-day meals to the beneficiary schools.

Having started as an NGO in Karnataka, it has expanded to 23 locations in 10 states across India running the mid-day meal programme feeding 1.4 million children every day. It's a mammoth task to sustain and expand that's why donation to charity matters immensely.

To make donation to charity and help the organisation, one can do it online. It's quick, safe and saves time. One can also avail 100% tax exemption benefit on his or her generous contribution. Making an online donation to charity is one of the ways to get involved with the cause of this NGO in Karnataka. However, Akshaya Patra also provides a host of activities through which one can contribute towards the mid-day meal programme. Get Involved will guide you through the various available options apart from online donation to charity.
