This NGO in India is present in twenty locations across nine states in the country, providing hot, nutritious mid-day meals to children in over 10,050 government schools. This Indian charity for children was set up in 2000, with the vision that no child should be denied an education because of hunger. It is in pursuit of this vision that Akshaya Patra asks people to donate for children in India, so it may realize its mission of feeding 5 million children by the year 2020. Currently, this Indian charity for children feeds over 1.3 million children across India, every day.
This NGO in India holds itself to very high standards of quality in the food that is prepared, and 11 of the kitchens that operate under this Indian charity for children are ISO 22000:2005 certified, while the remaining kitchens are in the process of certification. From the government, corporates and individuals who donate for children in India, Akshaya Patra utilizes these funds to constantly upgrade and maintain its food safety management systems to ensure that only safe, healthy food is sent to the schools.
This Indian charity for children has undertaken two kinds of kitchens across the country – centralized and decentralized. Out of twenty kitchens operating under this NGO in India, 18 kitchens are centralized, while 2 are decentralized. The centralised kitchens are large kitchen units that have the capacity to cook up to 1,00,000 meals a day for the schools located around the kitchen. In places where geographical terrain is a problem, decentralised kitchens are set up where local Women’s Self Help Groups donate for children of India, in terms of their time and energy to cook the meals.
This NGO in India is extremely particular about hygiene and safety levels, therefore from the procurement of vegetables to the sanitization of the vessels and kitchen staff, this Indian charity for children takes extreme care at each step of the process. Through the generous patrons who donate for children in India, Akshaya Patra has been able to finance technologically advanced machinery that ensures the safety and preservation of all food until consumption.
In the past thirteen years this NGO in India has done a great deal of useful work across the country. By providing the mid-day meal to schools, this charity in India has helped increase enrollment, attendance, concentration and socialization, helped address malnutrition and empowered women.
As word of this worthy cause has spread Akshaya Patra has also been beneficiary to generous companies who wish to donate for children in India such as Jamsetji Tata Trust, Cisco India, Corporation Bank, SBI Mutual Fund and many more.
