On the occasion of Diwali, the U.S.A team of The Akshaya Patra Foundation hosted a 'Summer Formal Diwali Benefit Dinner'. Primarily a fundraising event, it also focussed on creating awareness about the significance and potential of providing food for education for the underserved children. The event was held 5th October 2014 at Los Angeles, California. The event saw the presence of Gururaj Deshpande - Chairman of Akshaya Patra, U.S.A., Emily Rosenbaum - CEO of Akshaya Patra U.S.A., along with Manish Dayal – actor. Shekhar Kapur too joined in for the food for education cause by making a surprise appearance.
Akshaya Patra is currently serving food for education to 1.4 million children across India. An implementer of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, the NGO is supported by the Central Government, State Governments and various benevolent corporate and individual donors. During the event Deepak Chopra highlighted Akshaya Patra’s key concepts of 'excellence, efficiency and shared prosperity' in accomplishing the objectives of this programme.
Around 200 guests attended the event and shared their generosity by donating $500,000 as a support to Akshaya Patra.
