Akshaya Patra NGO for children provides food for education

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a NGO for children providing the daily, nutritious school feeding programme to over 1.4 million children across 10,770 Government and Government aided schools across India. The Foundation has 24 kitchen units across 10 states of India to implement the programme. In North India, by serving the mid day meal Hindi speaking students in Uttar Pradesh and other regional language speaking locations are given an incentive to attend school and get educated. Through this programme the organisation implements its vision that ‘No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger’. Currently Akshaya Patra is working to achieve its mission of feeding 5 million children by 2020. This mission is achievable through the support of those like the Government of India, corporates and individuals who want to donate to NGO in India and end classroom hunger.

This NGO for children was first launched in the year 2000 feeding 1,500 students across 5 schools in Bengaluru. Today the organisation has grown to be a globally recognised name with chapters in both the United States and United Kingdom. Understanding the need to maintain quality and hygiene in the cooking process, the Foundation implements stringent improvement initiatives like Kaizen Thunder, Six Sigma and Food Safety Management Systems in each kitchen. Working to make the food tasty as well as nutritious, the menu is modified to suit the local palate on North and South India. Therefore while eating the mid day meal Hindi speaking students of North India enjoy delicious items on the menu such as roti (Indian flatbread), dal (dried pulses curry), pulao (rice cooked in a broth), khichdi (rice with pulses) and other tasty vegetable dishes. The Vrindavan kitchen is one of the Foundation’s famous kitchens in North India. This kitchen has been equipped with a roti making machine that is capable of cooking up to 60,000 rotis in an hour. Besides this, the kitchen like the other centralised kitchens also has huge cauldrons capable of cooking hundreds of litres of rice and dal in just a few hours. However to set up and equip these large scale kitchens requires a huge amount of investment. Therefore often these kitchens are set up through the goodwill of those who wish to donate to ngo in India, and support the programme.

The Akshaya Patra non-profit organization for children runs two kinds of kitchen models. 22 kitchens follow the centralised kitchen format, while two kitchens follow the decentralised. The centralised kitchens are large scale mechanised units while the decentralised are set up in remote areas where road connectivity and infrastructure are in short supply. The Foundation provides an easy manner for those who want to donate to ngo in India to make a contribution through the online platform. To donate to the mid day meal hindi language pages are also available for easy viewing.
