Mid Day Meals Boost Education

The mid day meal programme is an initiative of the Government of India to provide free school lunch to the children studying in Government school. It is an effort to bring children to school so that they get educated along with getting one nutritious meal a day. In order to maximise its potential, the mid day meal programme implementation has been taken up by many NGOs. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is one such NGO. This NGO is based in Bangalore, India.

In June 2000, Akshaya Patra began implementing the mid-day meal programme in 5 Government schools in Bangalore by feeding 1500 children. The need of food for education was well understood by the Foundation. This understanding led it to spread its wings across India. Apart from Bangalore, this Indian NGO provides mid-day meal in 9 States namely- Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

It firmly believes that education has the power to bring about permanent change for two of the crucial crisis- hunger and illiteracy. This is the reason it aims to provide ‘unlimited food for education’. Hunger and illiteracy are also the two crucial UN Millennium Development Goals that are to be achieved. Through the mid-day meal programme Akshaya Patra is trying to make a difference in the lives of many needy children in India and thereby contributing towards the global goals.

Currently, Akshaya Patra is feeding 1.3 million children across 19 locations covering more than 9000 Government schools. It has witnessed significant difference in the academic performance and overall development of the children. The positive impact is evident in:

III.Classroom hunger being countered
IV. Improvement in concentration level and performance of the students
V.  Decrease in school drop-out rate
VI. Improvement in overall health of the children
