Mid-day meal awareness initiative by Akshaya Patra

The Akshaya Patra Foundation initiated a campaign called #HungryForSchool to spread awareness about the mid-day meal programme. This campaign was mainly to bring back children to school after the summer holidays. Akshaya Patra in India, being a mid-day meal NGO operates in ten states of the country benefitting 1.4 million children each day. The mid-day meal is one meal that millions of children look forward to when they come to school. The significance of the meal goes beyond just filling up hungry stomachs. The mid-day meal counters classroom hunger, enabling the children to perform well in their academics and extra-curricular activities, thereby aiding in overall development of the children.

Considering all the positive impacts Akshaya Patra held the #HungryForSchool campaign in India which also reached to other parts of the world through the medium of online platforms. The enthusiasm received from the supporters was overwhelming. Social media platform like Facebook saw an increase of 12,000 likes during the campaign. The donations received for the mid-day meal programme saw a rise. All this put together the degree of awareness about the programme was doubled. Akshaya Patra was able to reach the mass through this campaign and making them aware of the connection between food and education.
