The Akshaya Patra Foundation has been working as an Indian charitable trust since the year 2000. It made its start by serving mid-day meal to 1,500 children in five schools of Bangalore, Karnataka. Soon, it realised the need of this one time mid-day meal among the underserved children. With the support from Central Government, various State Governments and generous donors, this Indian charitable trust began expanding its reach to other parts of Karnataka and gradually to other states of India. In June 2006, this Indian charitable trust made its first eastward move by inaugurating a centralised kitchen at Puri.
The onset of operations in Puri marked the beginning of Akshaya Patra's service as a NGO in Puri. Working as a NGO in Puri, it has been currently catering to 55,835 children of 648 Government schools. Nayagarh, Rourkela and Cuttack are the other three regions in the state of Odisha where Akshaya Patra provides mid-day meal to children. Totally this NGO reaches out to 125,242 children in Odisha covering 1,461 schools. The NGO has centralised kitchen facility in Puri, Cuttack and Rourkela and it operated a decentralised kitchen model in Nayagarh due to topographical conditions.
Though Akshaya Patra receives Government grants and subsidies in implementing the mid-day meal programme, yet it to is depended on donations from its supporters to meet the requirements of the programme management, its sustenance and expansion. Hence donation for this non-profit organisation becomes as significant as to any other non-profit. This NGO in Puri thus takes care of the ease of donors when it comes to donation for the non-profit organisation. This Indian charitable trust allows its donors to make swift donations through both online donation and offline donation mode. If not donation for the non-profit, the supporters can also choose other volunteering options that are made available in the Get involved section of the NGO's website. Stories of Hope is a platform to know the beneficiaries of Puri and many more who would be benefitted by your support of either monetary contribution or through contribution of time and skill.
As children are the greatest asset for a nation, it is important to take care of their health and education. Mid-day meal programme is a medium through which children receive the goodness of a wholesome meal along with the rightful access to education. Mid-day meal helps to counter classroom hunger and thus allows children to be more attentive in their lessons. Witnessing the sea of positive change that this programme can bring, this Indian charitable trust aims to feed 5 million children by 2020. Indeed a humongous task, but achievable if everyone comes together. Apart from working as a NGO in Puri, Akshaya Patra is also implementing this programme in 22 other locations across India.
Feed the children of today to enable them to feed their families tomorrow.
