'Feed a hungry child'. When we hear this phrase, we all wish to live up to the phrase, but at the same time we wonder how. The answer lies in the mid-day meal programme. The mid-day meal programme is an initiative of the Government of India to provide free school lunch at all Government schools. Along with Governmental bodies there are many NGOs too that implement this programme and The Akshaya Patra Foundation is one such NGO. Akshaya Patra began its journey in Bangalore in the year 2000. Gradually it spread its reach and in February 2004 Akshaya Patra made its advent to provide mid-day meal in Rajasthan as a NGO in Jaipur for children.

The below table shows the total reach and the locations where Akshaya Patra is providing mid-day meal in Rajasthan:

The introduction of the mid-day meal in Rajasthan has improved the lives of many children both in terms of health and education. The mid-day meal has played a vital role in bringing children to school despite social hurdles. Recently, the NGO in Jaipur for children was visited by Bill Clinton. During the visit, Clinton got a tour of the NGO's kitchen in Jaipur and also to one of the beneficiary school. His interaction with the Akshaya Patra beneficiaries left him overwhelmed. During his visit to the school and kitchen he said that all of us should take up the responsibility of feeding a hungry child and imbibe it as a practice till we completely eradicate child hunger. This reinstated the potential of the mid-day meal programme even more.

One of the simplest ways to get involved with this initiative is to contribute donation for NGO. A donation for NGO of just Rs. 750 can feed one child for one whole year on each school day. This donation for NGO will empower a child with health and education. Along with this, as a donor the contributor will receive 100% tax exemption under section 35 AC. Apart from donation for NGO, The Akshaya Patra Foundation also has various other ways in which a supporter can become a part of the cause. A supporter can choose to be a volunteer for the NGO in Jaipur for children and spread awareness about the cause through social media and word of mouth. One can also choose to employ their skills and work with children by conducting extra-curricular classes for art, dance, music, sport and the like.

While providing mid-day meal in Rajasthan, Akshaya Patra also provides mid-day meal in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. It aims to feed 5 million children by 2020. Join the mission and help Akshaya Patra in feeding a hungry child, one at a time!
