Rs. 750 can feed a child for an entire year! The minute we read this, the first thought that surfaces is- is it really possible? The second thought is how is it possible?
More often than not the general idea of charity or donation is related to lump sum of contribution. However, at The Akshaya Patra Foundation that is not the case. Akshaya Patra is an NGOin India headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka. This NGO provides mid-day meals to more than 10,600 Government schools across 10 states. Currently, Akshaya Patra feeds 1.39 million children every day and aims to feed 5 million children by 2020.
Strategic planning and meticulously structured menu for the mid-day meal programme enables Akshaya Patra to feed one child for the entire year at just Rs. 750. The calculation behind this sum is as follows: on an average the total cost per meal is Rs. 7.40. Akshaya Patra receives Government subsidy in the form of grains and grants that amounts to Rs. 4.38. The remaining amount of Rs. 3.01 is borne by Akshaya Patra. When Rs. 3.01 is multiplied with the total number of operational days i.e. 232 days, it results to a sum of Rs 698.32. Generally an estimated 7.5% is added to this sum considering factors like inflation, state-wise variation of meal cost and other programme management costs which totals up to Rs. 52. Thus, it all adds up to Rs. 750. See here to know how your money is spent.
