Children NGO are present globally and they all focus on various issues related to child health, nutrition, education, child rights and the like. One such NGO is The Akshaya Patra Foundation. Akshaya Patra is one of the children NGO operating in India that implements the mid-day meal programme thereby providing free school lunch to the children of Government schools. It is present in 23 locations in India across 10 states. The city of Jaipur is one of its serving locations.
Akshaya Patra started operations as a NGO in Jaipur in February 2004. It currently serves 92,763 children across 1,081 Government schools in and around Jaipur city. Since 2004, the NGO has witnessed the significant changes this programme can bring to the lives of the children. This NGO in Jaipur operates the centralised kitchen model to prepare food for the children. The kitchen has the capacity to cook 250,000 rotis (Indian flat bread), 6 tonnes of dal (lentils) and 5 tonnes of rice in just three hours. Recently, Former President of USA, Bill Clinton visited this NGO in Jaipur along with Abhay Jain, Gururaj Deshpande and other delegates. Clinton was amazed and appreciated the level of hygiene and cleanliness being maintained by the NGO's kitchen in Jaipur.
After a detailed visit of the kitchen Clinton also visited one of the beneficiary schools of this children-NGO. He was delighted to meet the young and determined beneficiaries of the Foundation. Apart from functioning as a NGO in Jaipur, Akshaya Patra is operational in three other locations of Rajasthan namely Jodhpur, Nathdwara and Baran. In total, Akshaya Patra feeds 135,910 children across 1,830 Government schools in Rajasthan.
